Why do we have an abortion rate 20% higher than France’s (and more than twice as high as Germany’s), especially considering most doctors here won’t perform them? The answer is any country that has universal health care, where contraception is free, where child care is free or inexpensive, where there is less poverty because people don’t become bankrupt over medical bills — those societies are simply going to have fewer unplanned and unwanted pregnancies.
And there the mask gets pulled off the Bart Stupaks and the “Christians.” If the statistics show that countries with government-provided universal health care and nearly-free abortions are, in fact, the countries with the fewest abortions, then why on earth wouldn’t the Right be the first in line to support universal health care?
Because it isn’t about “universal health care.” It’s about controlling women, period. It’s about sticking your nose in other people’s business. It’s about pushing your religious beliefs on everyone else because voices in your head tell you your Jesus is The One — even though your Jesus never said one single solitary word in any of the four gospels of the Bible about abortion or fertilized eggs being human. You’ve just gone and made it up about “life beginning at conception.” Jesus never said that. The little voice in your head said that, the same little voice that wants your grubby paws on women’s uteruses. You need help. Please get some help and leave the rest of us alone, Mr. Stupak and friends.
I wish I could reblog this 1,000 times.
Ongoing on Twitter right now, people are tweeting their negative experiences with doctors and other “authorities” in the medical profession when it comes to transgender issues.
There is a LOT of this.
Everyone should go read up on this because it is a HUGE deal. Trans people seeking treatment do so because they NEED that treatment, and having it denied, or being HUMILIATED and de-humanized while seeking or receiving treatment takes a very large toll on our psyches. The psyches of a group of people with a 50% attempted suicide rate, and who are several orders of magnitude likelier to be killed than the average person. And no, it’s not getting better, because the homicide rate for transgender individuals increased by 20% last year.
Was sent to a Christian therapist and told that it’s sinful and I had to change #transdocfail
(I actually convinced him later that it was ok. At least he was willing to learn.)
I had my father get sick when I was 22. And I was poor, alright. And my father had an ulcer, and it exploded and you know all these toxins get in your blood. And basically, my father died, whatever, 50 days after his ulcer. So I had a father get sick while I was poor.
My mother got sick when I was rich. And my mother, you know… I don’t really want to get into it, but my mother was sicker than my father. And my mother’s alive. My mother’s fine, OK? I remember going to the hospital to see my mother and wondering, ‘Was I in the right place?’ Like, this was a hotel. Like it had a concierge, man.
People don’t… if the average person really knew the discrepancy in the health care system, there’d be riots in the streets, OK? They would burn this motherfucker down!”

Bringing this back, because some people don’t seem to understand that there is a discrepancy in the quality of care among poor, middle-class, and wealthy people, NO MATTER HOW DEBILITATING THEIR RESPECTIVE DISEASES MAY BE.
This is relevant to what I posted this morning.

“The monetary cost for a rape victim to receive treatment at a hospital in the United States.”
What the HELL.
Alright. That’s it. I’m fucking moving to Canada.
If you live in New York, DO NOT LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU - the New York State Office of Victims’ Services covers the entire cost of medical care for anything related to a crime that has been committed against you, regardless of whether or not the perpetrator has been found guilty in a court of law. They have, in fact, specific provisions for the coverage of rape kits and sexual assault forensic exams (but as far as the crime stuff goes - if, say, your rapist also broke your nose, they will likely cover the setting of your nose).
For once, as a New Yorker, I am glad to say: your tax dollars at work.
