Here’s a joke I made up just now: How do you make it appealing for a man on Halloween to leave the house dressed as a racist, sexist, homophobic, alcoholic liar with a history of sexually assaulting women? Give up? Call it a Don Draper costume.

If the guy’s older, you can call it a Roger Sterling costume, I suppose, and if he’s younger, a Pete Campbell costume. A chubby oddball with the right suspenders might even be able pull off a Bert Cooper costume. In the end, it doesn’t really matter what Mad Man you go as, because here’s the secret: They’re all just assholes in tie clips anyway.

Ever since Mad Men captivated the consciousness of a particular subset of the American population a few years back, we—men in particular—have learned to ignore how deplorable most of the male characters on the show are. Among the qualities listed above, the guys in and around Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Price are also rapists, cheats, thieves, pimps, layabouts, anti-Semites, and cowards. It’s probably redundant to note that they’re unflinching misogynists, but they are that, too, and to a degree so toxic many women flee them in tears or, more seldom, while sashaying to other jobs where they’ll actually be appreciated.

Advice for young feminists? Do something else besides feminism. I’m serious. The feminist blogosphere is oversaturated in my opinion. Please, find something else you love and take feminist theory there. It gets lonely over here in tech and video games – I have a great crew of other feminists but we are a little island in a vast sea. We need more feminist minded business bloggers, feminist theory wielding finance bloggers. Labor organizers with a feminist lens blogging. Can you imagine what Deadspin (the sports blog) would look like with a feminist on staff? Restructure writes about science, tech and feminism – join her! Publish a blog doing literary criticism with a feminist lens! Take on the NYT! Talk about class issues and feminism. Whatever it is, apply your feminism in a different space.

this is the quote I mentioned in my earlier work-thoughts dump. at least i think it is.

Online comment-writers to get own internet

A NEW internet is to be created for people who like writing comments, so everyone else can enjoy surfing the web without their torrents of bile.

The new web, dubbed ‘Masturnet’ after users’ penchant for literal and metaphorical self-indulgence, will be just pictures of things with the question ‘Why do you hate this?’ underneath.

Google-built algorithms will reward commenters by adding random numbers of Facebook Likes or retweets, giving users the false impression that they’re not just screaming their repugnant semi-literate vitriol into an ocean of white noise.

Paid moderators will occasionally pretend to be the celebrities or writers that are being commented on, appearing ‘below the line’ while acting chastened and educated by the commenters’ wise words.

Meanwhile normal people will be able to enjoy sending worthwhile messages and watching iPlayer dinosaur documentaries on a much faster version of the good internet.

Tom Booker of the Better Internet Federation said: “The internet is the greatest advance in human culture of the last 30 years, so why must it be dominated by geeks purple with fury about a review that lowered the overall score of Avengers Assemble on Metacritic?

“We considered various options, including simply sawing off the bottom half of the internet and dumping it at sea, but this seemed the most humane.”

Following the announcement, regular Mail Online commenter Vajazzle81 wrote: “GIPSYS get mi TAXES for FREE HOUSES & EUSSR traitors shud HANG & Kim Kardashian is a FAT BITCH.”
