Me three years ago: Oh God I hope nobody realizes I'm gay
Me now: Dammit why doesn't anybody realize I'm gay

Not queer like gay. queer like, escaping definition. Queer like some sort of fluidity and limitlessness at once. Queer like a freedom too strange to be conquered. Queer like the fearlessness to imagine what love can look like… and pursue it.

WHAT IF QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR COULD ACTUALLY GO TO THE CLUB WITHOUT BEING ENGULFED IN THE SWEAT OF WHITE QUEERS WHOSE STIFLING GAZES THEY EITHER CAN’T ESCAPE OR WILL ONLY BE THE SUBJECT OF FOR THE SECOND IT TAKES TO RECOGNIZE THAT THEY ARE NOT WHITE

WHAT IF QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR COULD ACTUALLY GO THE CLUB WITHOUT SEEING A WHITE QUEER WHO DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TWERK TO BIG FREEDIA AND LOOKS LIKE THEY USE THE WORD RATCHET ON WORDS WITH FRIENDS

WHAT IF QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR COULD ACTUALLY GO TO THE CLUB WITHOUT HAVING A WHITE QUEER GROPE THEM WITHOUT CONSENT BECAUSE THEY ARE “JUST DRUNK” AND OVERJOYED BY THE KNOWLEDGE OF BEING ABLE TO OCCUPY ANOTHER SPACE WHERE THEY CAN CELEBRATE THEMSELVES AND FEEL ENTITLED TO OTHER PEOPLES’ BODIES

WHAT IF QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR COULD ACTUALLY GO TO THE CLUB FOR FREE BECAUSE I’M NOT PAYING FOR THIS SHIT AGAIN

adding: WHAT IF QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR WITH FABULOUS HAIR COULD ACTUALLY GO TO THE CLUB AND DANCE ON THE DANCE FLOOR WITHOUT HAVING A PAIR OF INTRUSIVE ASS HANDS TOUCH YOUR HAIR/SCALP/FOREHEAD AT LEAST ONCE TO EVERY SONG

WHAT IF QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR WITH AFROS COULD ENJOY THE NIGHT WITHOUT HAVING BEEN ASKED IF THEIR HAIR IS REAL AND BELONGS TO THEM AND IF SOMEONE THEY’VE NEVER MET COULD TOUCH IT

For men to “confront” pornography means neither repudiating sexual pleasure nor ignoring the content of our sexual imaginations. It will require that we listen carefully to women, that we take seriously their pain, anguish, confusion, and embarrassment about the content of our pornography. It will require that we listen when women tell us about the pain and terror of sexual victimization, as well as their exhilaration at their claiming of a sexuality. This is not easy; men are not very good listeners. We’re not trained to listen to women, but trained to not listen, to screen out women’s voices with the screaming of our own needs. It will mean, therefore, listening to our own sexual yearnings, unfulfilled and, perhaps, unfulfillable, and exploring the mechanisms that will allow us to empower ourselves, and create images that arouse us without depicting the punishment of others as the basis for that arousal.
